Cool castle. Was closed for repairs when we visited in August 2024. The local museum next door is absolutely amazing. A great collection of artifacts and some incredible stories of islanders in action against the nazis during World War II.

It's a scenic drive to the place. The scalloway museum is nearby. It's a paid entry there. If in the area it's worth a visit

Another home of the Earls of Orkney, similar to the one in Kirkwall, in Orkney. In a similar condition, and equally popular with the cruise ship tourists, who descend upon them from their coaches, take them over for a short time, snapping and posing, before departing as quickly as they arrived.
This castle stands next to the Scalloway Museum, which is fortunate for the coach drivers, as parking in the area is severely limited.
The rooms mostly have labels on the walls, detailing their primary function, and in one of the ground floor main rooms, there are a series of panels giving the history of the building, the family, and social conditions. They are quite illuminating, but can cause hold-ups if too many visitors want to read them all!

Super friendly staff. I arrived when it was closed but a chap in the museum gave me the key and I had the who castle to myself. Quite impressive inside.

A small castle which you can enter without admission.

The history or Patrick Stewart was well told in a small display in the castle.

It’s quite small but it’s certainly worth a look if you’re near by.

I went in the winter months and it was still accessable but I would travel to the town by bus as it is cheap and easy. I went by taxi and it was expensive. I got the place to myself and you get to go and collect the key. It is well preserved with even floors. The signs are informative but there is not a lot of info with each room as the plagues were empty. It looked lovely in the snow.
