We had a fantastic weekend break with Shire Cruisers, it was our first time on a narrow boat and operating the locks, the tuition provided was excellent and set us up for the rest of our trip. The boat was clean, well equipped and had everything we needed for a comfortable 3 night stay. We thoroughly enjoyed our holiday and made lasting memories. Thank you Susan and team.

We had to go to Brighouse when we arrived at Sowerby Bridge so we set sail at 5pm because of a brocken down lock. We were not told in advance( very poor from shire cruses). Sailed untill 10pm. The locks are 200year old design and most locks are inoperative. Next day the boat broke down because a cable snapped so we were hanging around for about 2hrs untill shires engineer came out to fix the breakdown which lasted about 45mins. Later that day we called out canal and river trust to fix a lock that would not fill quickly enough. I had to clear large amounts of river weed from the lock gates and outside the lock gates to enable to carry on. At a 3 lock set of gates the bottom gate of the top lock leaked to the point where the boat was laid on its side. All in all the trip was a disaster then coming back a boat was adrift behind a lock gate with no skipper on board. The rivers are in a mess, the owners were not to blame for the gates but people who use the rivers need to abide by the river etiquette.

We have just spent a relaxing week aboard the Norfolk. The boat was well equipped. Washing up liquid, cloth, washing up sponge, matches, hand soap all supplied. The kitchen is well equipped and I wanted for nothing. A dustpan and brush would have been useful.
I would highly recommend Shire and Jeff who did our induction, explained everything clearly. The locks could be tricky on a windy day, but we are an older couple and managed well. Thank you shire for a chilled week.

Brilliant short break. The boat had everything needed, including a great shower, and they are in great condition! We were worried about the locks, but the staff guided you down the first few locks, so we were fine for the rest of the trip. Highly recommend.

Just returned from a brilliant trip (our third) with Shire Cruisers. We knew from the start that there were problems with the guillotine lock at Salterhebble but Shire were great in keeping us up to date. Susan and Nigel were as ever, excellent and charming. In the two previous trips we sailed from Sowerby Bridge to Todmorden and back. This time, because of the broken lock, we sailed eastwards from Brighouse. This eastwards trip was MUCH BETTER and much easier to navigate and I'm so glad we had to go that way this time. Some locks were easier than others but all worked fine, you just have to take your time and think it through. When I'm that age, I expect I might have a few stiff joints myself. The scenery is seriously breathtaking going towards Wakefield with loads of wildlife and lots of kingfisher sightings. The hot weather has resulted in there being more weeds and lilies growing but you dont need to clear them away, just accellerate slighty towards them, go into neutral so you don't tangle your prop' and just float on through. No drama at all. And as you go, enjoy the sight of red and blue dragonflies flying over the bright yellow lilies. We got stuck in one place, long story, but Nigel sorted us out and we were soon on our way with the help of a family we met. (If you read this, you know who you are and thank you again)
We got as far as Horbury and had an amazing meal at The Bingley when we got there. While we were out, we got notification that Salterhebble had been fixed so we sailed back to Sowerby Bridge this morning. If you're worried that in going eastwards you'll miss out on seeing Hebden Bridge which is lovely (and lively) go for a visit after you leave the boat or before you pick it up. Mooring at Hebden isn't that great anyway despite what you might have heard.
All in all 11/10
Brilliant and when we go next time, we'll be heading eastwards again.

Had a brilliant holiday! All the staff were extremely helpful and the boat was the best we've ever had. Everything worked perfectly, and was clean and very well maintained. Just back in The Netherlands after an amazing week spent on the Rochdale Canal, out of Sowerby Bridge, up to Walsden and back to Sowerby. Nights stopped in Mytholmroyd, Todmorden, Hebden Bridge and a couple between. First time taking charge of a narrowboat, and this past week really has opened a veritable Pandora's Box going forward. Utterly beautiful countryside, wonderful people, a charming boat that genuinely became home for a week, and a team back at base that were straight, no nonsense, and couldn't help enough. We will return without doubt, and cannot recommend Shire Cruisers anyway near enough. Thank you!
